Eastern Broccoli Project

Carroll County, Virginia

Small scale broccoli production is already in operation on several farms in Carroll County, Virginia, where a 1200 foot rise in elevation results in diverse growing conditions. Broccoli trials this year are located on a farm at higher elevation and are supervised by Wythe Morris.

Transplants for the first trial were put into the ground on 24 May. On 7 June, the area was hit with a hail storm that caused some damage to the young transplants and surrounding crops. Two weeks later, however, most plants in the trial appeared to have recovered and were growing well.
