Fruits as Ornamentals

by Marvin Pritts

Many are familiar with highbush cranberry (Viburnum trilobum), but few realize that the berries make an excellent jelly. (Don't confuse this with V. ovatum, a similar ornamental from Europe that has bitter berries.) Berries can be left on the bush to provide an attractive red addition to the landscape even after the first snows have fallen.

Elderberries, closely related to highbush cranberry, also produce fruits that are processed into jellies, pies and wine - if you can get to them before the birds do.
