Fruits as Ornamentals

by Marvin Pritts

Explorations to Siberia and northern Asia have returned to the US other species of Kiwifruit (Actinidia arguta, A. kolomikta) that are hardy in the Northeast. In fact, there are more than 10 acres of hardy kiwifruits growing in Pennsylvania. These taste better than the kiwifruits in the grocery store because they are sweeter, more flavorful, but most importantly, they don't have fuzzy skins so can be eaten without peeling. Both a male and female plant are needed for fruit production. The plants are attractive, and the fall foliage is intensely yellow.
