Useful documents related to Perennial and Flower Bulb Combinations:

The following are Research Newsletters published in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Wholesaler's Association for Flowerbulbs and Nursery Stock, in Hillegom, Holland. These are industry-oriented publications, full of pictures, that should be useful to a wide range of readers.

Combining Flowerbulbs and Perennials: Increasing the Market for Both Number 11. (Aug. 2006). This newsletter describes initial results from a multi-year trial on combinations of flowerbulbs and perennials for zone 5 gardens.

Producing and Using Bulbous Plants for Mixed Planters. Number 8. (November 2005) This newsletter was written by Terri Starman, a horticultural colleague at Texas A&M University. It's full of color, and gives many great ideas for creative use of bulbous plants in summer planters.

Past, current, and Future Research Results of the Flowerbulb Research Program. Number 7. (July 2005) This newsletter gives an overview of many of the activities that have been completed, are ongoing, and are planned for the future.

Perennialization of Hyacinth Cultivars in Ithaca, Long Island, and Clemson, SC.Number 4. (October 2004) A summary of hyacinth perennialization in Ithaca, N.Y., Riverhead, N.Y. and Clemson, S.C.

4th Year Narcissus Ratings in Ithaca, Long Island, and Clemson. Number 3. (April 2004) This newsletter summarizes a 4 year experiment on perennialization of 60 cultivars of daffodils in Ithaca, NY, Riverhead, NY, and Clemson SC. Some new work on 1-MCP (EthylBloc, SmartFresh, FreshStart) as an inhibitor of ethylene in tulips is also included.

 

Summary of Combination Plantings of Bulb and Perennial Plantings from IFBC (View pdf)

This is the summary of "the combination trials conducted from 2004 to 2007" by the International Flower Bulb Centre and "involved planting combinations of perennials and flower bulbs in the Netherlands (Boskoop and Wolfheze), Germany (Hoxter), Sweden (Enkoping) and Italy (Brera). This report provides the results for the flowering seasons during the years of the trials and gives a final evaluation regarding the varieties used, climate, habitat, etc."

Bulb.com: This is the site of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center/ North America, dedicated to eveything about bulbs and bulb flowers for U.S. and Canadian gardeners.

American Iris Society: This site contains cultural information, excerpts from the Society's bulletin, descriptions of the different iris categories, local Iris Society contacts, and membership information.
